Tanzania is one of nine pilot countries implementing pilot UN-REDD national programmes for REDD Readiness. The programme document for Tanzania was presented to the UN-REDD Policy Board in March 2009. It has the following planned outcomes:

Royal Norwegian Embassy funding $2.7 million project with Jane Goodall Institute in Tanzania
The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Tanzania has awarded more than $2.7 million (USD) to the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI)-Tanzania. The three-year grant will enable JGI to provide local community-based organizations and district governments with the training, equipment and other materials needed to protect their forestland and—ultimately— benefit from income earned through the sale of REDD carbon credits. The funds will support JGI’s work in the Masito-Ugalla Ecosystem, one of the least developed areas of the world. The project will primarily conserve approximately 70,000 hectares of pristine forests and woodlands found in one of the last large expanses of intact forest in Tanzania, enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem functions including providing habitat for chimpanzees.
